Hi, I’m Jasmine from Three Minute Montessori (or 3mm as readers affectionately call it). I founded 3mm in 2016, a blog showing how to set up Montessori activities in 3 minutes or less.
My first Montessori classroom observation in London made me fall in love with Montessori.
A child of 3 or 4yo, lugging a heavy bucket of soapy water.
His classmates were oblivious, steeped in their own work. The teachers were at the far end of the classroom.
This child was alone.
As he carried that bucket, the soapy water inevitably sloshed and splashed… all over the floor.
I’d been sternly instructed to stay put on my kid-sized chair, and not interfere with the ongoing class no matter what. Gripping both sides of that tiny chair, I looked around.
Surely someone would take notice of this child who clearly needed help!
Still no one stepped forth to help.
That’s when I heard a little sing-song voice, humming softly to himself, “Gotta wipe it up! Gotta wipe it up!”
And he did. Walking over to a shelf, gathering a few rags, then returning to soak up the spill.
A regular passer-by peeking in might have thought, why are they making kids do chores in this school?
But… this wasn’t just a chore, was it? This child of no more than 4yo, demonstrated independence, problem-solving, resilience.
And nobody made him do it. There were no sticker charts, no teachers clapping ardently, no parents hovering anxiously. It was child-led and self-directed from start to end.
This feat wouldn’t have been possible if not for the access and trust this child was given. It wouldn’t have been possible, without a Montessori space that enabled him.
After seeing Montessori in action that morning, I never looked back.
When my family relocated to London, I trained at the renowned Maria Montessori Institute UK. I’m now certified as an AMI Assistant for 0-3, 3-6 and 6-12 years. Training was transformative but geared towards classroom work, rather than the raw imperfect rhythms of daily family life.
